Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Urgent HBOT Treatment for Sudden Hearing Loss in Concord, CA

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a medical emergency. The window for effective treatment is narrow — typically within 14 days of onset — and outcomes deteriorate significantly with each passing day. At NorCal Hyperbarics in Concord, we work urgently alongside ENT physicians throughout the Bay Area to start HBOT as part of an evidence-based combination treatment protocol, giving patients the best possible chance of hearing recovery.

HOW IT AFFECTS

How SSNHL Affects Your Hearing and Daily Life

Sudden hearing loss is medically urgent. Because the inner ear has no capacity for regeneration, hearing lost to SSNHL that isn't treated promptly is often lost permanently. Understanding the full scope of impact reinforces why immediate action matters:

Physical Impacts

  • Unilateral hearing loss: Most SSNHL cases affect one ear, creating difficulty with sound localization, understanding speech in noisy environments, and participating in normal conversation.

  • Tinnitus: A persistent ringing, buzzing, or whooshing sound in the affected ear, which occurs in up to 70% of SSNHL cases and can be severely disruptive.

  • Aural fullness: A sensation of pressure or blockage in the ear that may accompany or precede hearing loss.

  • Dizziness and vertigo: Vestibular disruption affecting balance, sometimes severely enough to interfere with daily functioning.

Psychological and Social Impacts

  • Acute anxiety and distress: Waking with sudden hearing loss is profoundly alarming, and the uncertainty about whether hearing will return significantly increases psychological stress.

  • Communication difficulty and isolation: Struggling to follow conversations, especially in groups or over the phone, leads many patients to withdraw from social and professional engagements.

  • Professional impact: Musicians, teachers, physicians, and others whose work depends on hearing can face career disruption.

WHAT IS IT

Understanding Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL)

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined as a rapid-onset hearing loss of 30 decibels or more across at least three consecutive frequencies, occurring within 72 hours. It affects an estimated 5 to 20 people per 100,000 annually in the United States and is most common between the ages of 40 and 60, though it can occur at any age.

In most cases (approximately 85 to 90%), no specific cause is identified despite thorough evaluation — these are termed idiopathic SSNHL. Proposed mechanisms include viral infection of the cochlea or auditory nerve, vascular events causing cochlear ischemia, autoimmune injury, and intracochlear membrane rupture. The remaining cases are associated with identifiable causes such as acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma), autoimmune disease, Meniere's disease, or systemic vascular conditions.

SSNHL is a medical emergency that requires immediate evaluation by an ENT (otolaryngologist) and rapid initiation of treatment. The 14-day window is critical: studies consistently show that patients who begin treatment — corticosteroids, and ideally HBOT — within two weeks of onset achieve significantly better hearing recovery than those who delay. If you experience sudden hearing loss, ringing in the ear, or a sensation of ear fullness upon waking, seek care the same day.

HOW WE HELP

How HBOT Supports Hearing Recovery

The inner ear (cochlea) is one of the most oxygen-sensitive structures in the human body. Its sensory hair cells have extremely high metabolic demands and almost no tolerance for hypoxia (oxygen deficiency). When blood flow or oxygenation to the cochlea is disrupted, hair cells begin to die within minutes to hours, and once lost, they do not regenerate.

HBOT corrects cochlear hypoxia by saturating the blood plasma with oxygen at pressures of 2.0 to 2.5 atmospheres, achieving tissue oxygen levels high enough to reach even the ischemic areas of the inner ear that cannot be reached by red blood cells. This directly supports survival of stressed but still-viable hair cells, reduces inflammatory damage to cochlear structures, and may restore function in cells that have been injured but not yet irreversibly lost.

The standard of care for SSNHL endorsed by the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) includes systemic corticosteroids as primary therapy and recommends HBOT as an adjunctive option for patients who do not respond adequately. Clinical evidence, including a systematic review published in The Laryngoscope and multiple randomized controlled trials, shows that HBOT combined with steroids produces significantly better hearing outcomes than steroids alone. Treatment is most effective when started within the first 14 days of symptom onset — contact us immediately if you are experiencing sudden hearing loss.

BENEFITS

Benefits of HBOT for Sudden Hearing Loss

HBOT addresses the core pathophysiology of SSNHL — cochlear ischemia and hypoxia — through mechanisms that steroids alone cannot replicate.

Restoring Oxygen to the Cochlea

HBOT delivers plasma oxygen concentrations 10 to 15 times above normal to the inner ear's cochlea, directly reversing the hypoxic state that drives cochlear hair cell death and gives the surviving cells the resources needed for repair.

Synergy with Corticosteroid Therapy

HBOT is used in combination with corticosteroids (typically oral or intratympanic dexamethasone), which suppress inflammatory damage in the cochlea. The two therapies are synergistic — steroids reduce inflammation while HBOT restores the oxygen needed for cellular recovery.

Clinically Documented Hearing Recovery

Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated significantly higher rates of hearing improvement when HBOT is added to steroid therapy, compared to steroids alone. The Cochrane Collaboration has reviewed the evidence and concluded that HBOT produces a significant improvement in pure-tone average hearing in SSNHL patients.

Tinnitus Reduction

Many patients also report reduction in tinnitus severity following HBOT, as improved cochlear perfusion stabilizes the abnormal neural firing that produces the ringing or buzzing sensation.
